Letter from the President

Hello Newcomers,

Welcome! Can it really be September? Summer is winding down, and while I am hopeful for a few more beach days before the weather changes, I have to admit that I am looking forward to getting back into the routine that autumn brings. To be honest, I made a huge mistake after I moved to Madison - I waited over a year to join Newcomers. It ended up being a tough year of trying to figure out how to navigate a new area, and adjusting to recently becoming a mom. Once I FINALLY joined Newcomers, I realized what an extraordinary organization this is, and how much easier that first year would have been. I learned so much more about Madison and the surrounding shoreline towns while also making great new friends. Why hadn’t I done this sooner?

We actually moved to Madison on a whim. We were living in Westchester County, NY and I was pregnant. Maybe it was the hormones, but I had this great idea that we should buy an antique home and restore it. Madison wasn’t really on our radar because it was so far from New York City, but when I fell in love with a 160+ year old house online, we decided to check it out. The house needed work, but as soon as I saw the backyard, I fell in love. I knew that backyard was where our soon-to-be-born daughter was going to grow and play - instead of the parking lot of our apartment building. We had lunch at RJ Julia’s, checked out the town, the beautiful waterfront, and before you know it, we were under contract on this antique fixer upper in Madison. It is what brought us to this beautiful town, and I am forever grateful that we took a chance on that house and are now raising our daughter here.

Three years later, I have to say that the Madison Newcomers Club has truly enriched our Madison experience. Getting together to socialize and create new friendships at our monthly meetings, SIG (Special Interest Group) and community events, is always fun. I joined mainly for the Kids and Coffee SIG, and could never have guessed how much I would enjoy the monthly meetings, adult socials, ladies nights, gourmet club, etc... We have a variety of SIGs and can always add more if there is something that you are passionate about. Newcomers is also involved in many community events, as well as our annual Touch-a-Truck fundraiser to raise money for our scholarship fund. The Newcomers experience is what you make of it, and I hope that if you are new to Madison that you will join and see for yourself how enriching the Madison Newcomers Club can be.
